At HCOS, we celebrate the unique talents and achievements of our students, and today we shine a spotlight on Kyla, a Grade 8 student whose passion for Highland dance has taken her to incredible heights.
“My free time has allowed me to dance during the day and go to competitions on weekends,” she shares.
Dancing to Victory
Kyla recently made waves by winning the Novice Aggregate in Campbell River, Port Alberni, Victoria and Port McNeil Highland Dance Competitions. She has traveled across Vancouver Island, showcasing her skills and spreading the joy of this traditional dance form.
In Kyla’s words, “I’ve always loved dancing, and when my brother played the bagpipes for Remembrance Day, I watched the Highland dancers perform. They were excellent, and I wanted to learn how to dance. I enjoy competing, visiting different places and meeting new dancers every year.”
A Passion Years in the Making
Starting at just 4 ½ years old, Kyla’s journey in dance is one of perseverance and growth. Over the years, she has refined her movements, mastered intricate techniques, and fallen in love with the camaraderie and cultural richness of Highland dance. Her dream? To compete at the Cowal Championships in Scotland, the ultimate stage for Highland dancers worldwide.
Not only does Kyla aim to compete internationally, but she also dreams of teaching Highland dance, passing on her passion and expertise to future dancers.
Kyla’s journey exemplifies the power of dedication, passion, and the support of a flexible education system. Her achievements remind us that with the right resources and determination, our students can truly soar.
