Most entrepreneurs don’t launch their first business before finishing elementary school, but Grade 2 and Grade 3 brothers Samson and Odin S. aren’t your typical business partners. Together, they have founded The Lyric Lads, a musical business venture that brings the “Golden Oldies” straight to retirement residences!
- Oldies but Goodies: Spreading Smiles One Song at a Time
The idea for the business grew naturally out of a desire to connect and share music. The brothers got their start last year performing for seniors in their church community. Realizing how much everyone loved the music, they decided to take it to the next level: putting together a polished show and officially launching their own business venture.
Singing classics across the Okanagan Valley has turned out to be a win-win for everyone involved.
“Singing at retirement residences in Kelowna has brought so many smiles to the faces of older people, while also making us feel happy!”
- Taking the Show on the Road
The Lyric Lads have already travelled up and down the Okanagan Valley to perform, but their tour schedule is about to get even bigger. This summer, the duo plans to take their show on the road to Ontario!
Expanding the business has come with plenty of personal growth for the young performers.
They note that they have learned that “music, even old music, is so much fun to sing along to!” and that “it is good to try new things even if they feel scary at first!”
- A "Cent-sational" Way to Give Back
These shows have doubled as an interactive classroom. Having their own business has provided a hands-on way to learn about math and money management.
But the learning doesn’t stop there. Samson and Odin are already using their platform to make a difference, donating a portion of their business profits to local charities that help moms and kids in need.
How do a second and third grader manage a touring musical business? Samson and Odin credit their home education for giving them the time they need to rehearse their setlists and the scheduling freedom to perform.
“We have had lots of time to learn songs and can put on shows any time of day! Usually, we get invited for Friday Happy Hours on Friday afternoons, when most kids would still be in school.”
The HCOS community is keeping an eye out for these two bright stars as they continue to spread joy, one oldie at a time!
