For Kent H., education has been more than doing the work handed to him; it has been pushing further, learning faster, and chasing knowledge wherever it leads.

This year, Kent reached an incredible milestone: graduating high school three years early and beginning his university journey ahead of schedule.

It’s an achievement that reflects years of curiosity, determination, and a love of learning that began long before graduation was even on the horizon.

Kent’s dedication to his education sparked when he was just 10 years old.

I decided I wanted to go to University when I was 10,” he says, “At first it was because I loved math and wanted to keep learning it, but didn’t have anything more to learn at my grade level.”

With that spark of curiosity, his desire to learn more quickly expanded into new areas of interest. During this expansion, he discovered a new passion for computer science, which opened the door for the rest of his educational career.

“I got into Computer Science and decided to do that at university as well.”

Kent completed his high school education through both HCOS and Parkland Secondary School, though the majority of his courses were completed through HCOS.

The flexibility of online learning and home education played a critical role in his decision to move beyond the pace of traditional schooling.

“Without homeschooling, I don’t think I could have jumped over as many grade levels as I did,” Kent explains. “I started high school when I was grade 5 or 6 by age.”

Instead of being restricted by traditional grade structures, Ken was able to progress through his studies based on his ability and determination. This would ultimately allow him to reach graduation years ahead of schedule.

Although Kent is celebrating his early graduation, he’s already well into the next stage of his academic career.

“This is my first year of full-time university,” he explains. “Right now I’m finishing off my last first-year course, as well as three courses for second year.”

Even before officially starting a full-time university course load, Kent had begun preparing for the transition through Advanced Placement classes and the accelerated entry program.

Even now in university, his eyes are still set on the future.

“After that is third and fourth year, and then I’m done unless I want to go for a master’s degree or PHD.”

Reaching this goal well beyond the usual timeline has given Kent more than academic achievement; it has also shaped how he approaches future challenges.

“Now that I’ve made it this far, the experience has shown me that if I set my mind to something, I can do it, no matter how impossible it seems.”

That determination will likely serve him well as he continues exploring the complex and creative world of computer science

Kent’s journey is a wonderful reminder that when curiosity is encouraged and students are given the flexibility to pursue their passions, incredible things can happen.
