At HCOS, we love celebrating the incredible achievements of our students. Every learner’s story is unique, and we’re proud to support them as they pursue their passions—in the classroom and beyond. Today, we’re highlighting Grade 11 student Kai K., whose dedication to chess has already earned him a spot in the Chess Federation of Canada (CFC) and a memorable over‑the‑board victory.
A Stand‑Out Win on the Board
Kai has played chess competitively since he was 14, but last season marked a milestone: he clinched third place at a university tournament after defeating National Master, Zachary Liu.
Chess is more than trophies for Kai—it’s a continual lesson in focus, patience, and good sportsmanship.
“ I learn good sportsmanship. I have never been refused a hand-shake in my career – LoL.”
While most of his events are within driving distance of Vancouver, Kai is scouting tournaments across Canada—and even considering his first‑ever flight to compete.
Overcoming Limitations
Competing at a high level hasn’t been without challenges. Travel costs, equipment, and finding quiet study space can limit serious training time.
Even so, Kai continues to analyze games, study openings, and seek stronger opponents whenever he can. Kai shares how HCOS and home education has allowed him to arrange study hours around tournaments and training sessions.
What’s Next?
Kai plans to enter as many OTB tournaments as possible—locally and beyond. He’s eyeing events on the opposite coast, weighing flight costs and logistics, and dreaming of climbing the CFC rating list.
The HCOS community is cheering him on and wishes him the very best in all his future matches.
