Tenacious Takedown: Meet Sam S.

For Grade 9 HCOS student Sam S, wrestling isn’t just about stepping onto a mat — it’s about stepping into challenge and about discipline.

In December, Sam travelled to Chilliwack, BC, for a wrestling tournament. Through determination, practice, and a love for winning, Sam pinned his opponent and took home the gold.

It was a victory that reflected more than just strength or technique. It represented months of learning, daily training, and the courage to step into competition despite nerves and uncertainty.

And perhaps most impressive? Sam only started wrestling just over a year ago.

Wrestling demands both physical endurance and mental focus. There’s no bench to sit on and no teammate to sub in. When Sam steps onto the mat, it’s just him, his training, and the opponent in front of him.

And yes — Sam is honest about one true motivation.

He loves winning.

I love the physical challenge of wrestling other wrestlers and taking trips with the team. I love winning!”

Starting wrestling just a year ago, Sam entered the sport knowing it would take time to improve. Wrestling is known for being technically complex and physically demanding, often requiring years of experience to master fundamentals.

But Sam leaned into the learning curve.

Through consistent training and commitment, he quickly developed his skillset and confidence. Each practice became an opportunity to refine technique and build his strengths.

Another important part of Sam’s growth has been learning to manage competition weight, a process that requires discipline and body awareness. It’s an aspect of the sport that demands responsibility, and Sam has approached it with focus and determination.

Sam’s season is still building momentum. Next on the horizon are Zones and Provincials, where competition will be even tougher and stakes even higher.

To prepare, Sam attends daily practices after school, continuing to build endurance, technique, and strategy. Each practice is another step toward becoming a stronger, more confident competitor.

And if his first year is any indication, Sam is only just getting started.

Over time, he has learned how to manage nerves, trust his preparation, and stay focused under pressure. Each match — win or lose — has helped him build confidence and resilience.

Winning gold in December was a powerful confirmation that his hard work is paying off. But more importantly, it showed him what is possible when preparation meets opportunity.

Home education has given Sam something incredibly valuable as an athlete: time and flexibility.

“I have been able to give more time to my training since my weekdays have more time than when I was at another school.”

Sam shared that he is grateful to have more space in his day to focus on training, recovery, and preparation. That balance allows him to pursue competitive sport seriously while staying committed to his academics.

While the gold medal is an incredible accomplishment, Sam’s journey is about more than podium finishes.

It’s about stepping into something new.
It’s about pushing past nerves.
It’s about discovering strength, physically and mentally.

Sam has shown what dedication and courage can accomplish. And as he prepares for the next stages of competition, one thing is clear:

This is only the beginning.
