Short Reach, Big Goals: Meet Nathaniel K.

When Nathaniel K. first walked into the climbing gym, he knew absolutely nothing about rock climbing. He was in Grade 2, the holds were high, and Level 0 was the only place to start. So that’s where he began.

That was then. Now, Nathaniel can complete most Level 2 climbs at Gneiss, an achievement for any young climber, and especially impressive for one who came in with zero experience. He has worked his way up hold by hold, visit by visit, showing the kind of quiet, consistent effort that turns beginners into climbers.

“I started not knowing anything. I started by doing level 0 climbs, but now I can do most 2s.”

There is one small obstacle Nathaniel is candid about: he’s a little short, which means the final holds on some routes are just out of reach. But his dad came up with a solution that is both practical and perfectly “dad”.

“My dad said if I just put my hands close to the end, that counts for me.”

Ask Nathaniel why he loves climbing, and his answer is simple, honest, and kind of profound: “I like the feeling of accomplishing my goals.”

There is something special about a sport that makes progress so visible. Every level is a new challenge. Every completed route is a goal met. For a student, that kind of concrete, tangible accomplishment is deeply motivating, and Nathaniel has clearly caught the bug.

“I can overcome things if I keep going.”

That’s a big takeaway for someone in Grade 2. Persistence, grit, the understanding that the wall doesn’t get easier, you just get stronger. Nathaniel has figured that out through climbing, and it’s a lesson that will carry well beyond the gym.

As for what comes next? The answer is straightforward: “I want to start doing higher numbers.” Eyes on the next level, always.

Nathaniel’s climbing habit fits naturally into his homeschool routine. “We have time during the day, after we finish our book work, of course, and the gym is pretty empty usually.”

That “of course” says a lot. Nathaniel knows the deal: learning comes first, and climbing is the reward waiting on the other side. It’s a little system that works. Because homeschooling gives his family control over the daily schedule, they can head to Gneiss at a time when the gym is quiet, and the walls are free,  no crowds, no waiting, just Nathaniel and the next climb.

For a young athlete still building skills and confidence, that low-pressure environment makes a real difference. And for a kid who loves the feeling of accomplishing his goals, having the freedom and flexibility to show up consistently is everything. One session at a time, one level at a time, Nathaniel K. is on his way up.

We can’t wait to see the new heights you reach in the future, Nathaniel!
