Stepping Into the Spotlight: Meet Katie B.

For Grade 8 HCOS student Katie B, the stage is more than a place to perform; it’s an outlet for creativity, passion, and expressing herself. This year, Katie took the next step in her theatre experience by performing in her first professional musical theatre production of Annie!

Katie is no stranger to musical theatre; in fact, this was her fourth musical, but her first time performing in a professional production. This time around, she played Duffy, one of the orphans in the musical, and had an ensemble role.

Stepping into a professional production meant new expectations and bigger stages, but Katie embraced the change with the utmost confidence. Performing at this level allowed her to grow, learn, and experience theatre beyond community productions thanks to the Gateway Theatre in Richmond.

The best part? She shares the simple reason she keeps coming back:

“I love being on stage.”

There are many notable musical numbers throughout the show, but the one that caught her eye and became her favourite is You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.’

Being part of a production takes time, energy, and commitment, including rehearsals, performances, and travel throughout the Lower Mainland. This all became part of Katie’s routine as she prepared for the 22 shows she would perform in!

Home education has played an important role in making that possible. With a flexible learning schedule, Katie can attend auditions, rehearsals, and shows that wouldn’t be possible without home education.

What’s next for this budding performer, you may ask? Katie has her eyes on her future acting career: more auditions, more musicals, and more time on stage.

Her journey is just beginning, and her willingness to step into new opportunities shows both courage and dedication. Whether she’s rehearsing lines, learning choreography, or singing her heart out, Katie is doing what she loves.

The HCOS community is excited to give Katie a standing ovation from the audience as she continues to grow as a performer. Katie’s story is a wonderful reminder that when students have the opportunity to pursue their passions, great things can happen, one spotlight at a time.
