From Scrap to Sword: Fenton’s Katana Project

For Grade 7 HCOS student Fenton B, creativity isn’t just about ideas or concepts, but it’s about bringing those ideas and concepts to life. This year, Fenton undertook a unique project that combined resourcefulness and craftsmanship: building his own katana sword from recycled materials!

Using materials such as PVC pipe, old wooden handles, and even seatbelts from cars, Fenton designed and assembled his stunning creation, which he later presented at HCOS’s Community Connections in Vernon. His project reflects his ability to think outside the box and turn something ordinary into something extraordinary.

For Fenton, the project wasn’t just about making something unique; it was about expressing his creativity in a way that challenged him. Each step of the process was a new discovery of how being creative fuels a joy in learning.

“It took a weekend to build, and it was so much fun,” Fenton shared about making his katana.

However, Fenton didn’t stop there; presenting his project was a big step as well. Even though public speaking isn’t his favourite, sharing something he built with joy and excitement gave him the confidence to stand tall and speak up.

Fenton’s katana project is a testament to how creativity can spark growth, confidence, and curiosity. By following his passions, Fenton reminds us that learning isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. Sometimes, it happens in places like a workshop, where ideas can take shape and become reality.

Congratulations on completing your project Fenton! Your creativity and craftsmanship are something to be proud of, and we cannot wait to see what your creative mind builds next!
