On The Edge: Bella A’s Recovery

Grade 8 HCOS student, Bella A., is no stranger to the discipline required in elite figure skating. Her most recent competition showcased not only her technical training but also her commitment to continuing her passion after a difficult setback.

During practice, Bella sustained a severe hand injury that limited her movement. For a sport that demands balance and precision, this presented a significant challenge. Despite the limitation, Bella continued preparing for competitions, adjusting her training to stay focused on her performances.

Bella stepped onto the ice, determined to perform at her best, not defined by the injury, but by the work she had put in.

Figure skating leaves little room for error, and competing with an injured hand adds another layer of complexity. Bella’s preparation required adaptability, careful management, and persistence as she worked toward competition readiness.

Her training during this time reflected the discipline that high-level sport demands. Each practice focused on maintaining skill execution while navigating physical limitations — a process that highlighted the resilience required to compete safely and effectively.

This period of adjustment ultimately led to a competition performance that reflected sustained effort.

At a major competition in Summerland in early February, Bella delivered two clean programs: a milestone for her season. The performance earned her two gold medals and the Yvette Delcourt Memorial Award, presented to the skater achieving the highest freeskate score across all levels of the event.

The results marked a significant accomplishment, especially given the challenges she had worked through leading into the competition. Bella’s execution on the ice demonstrated preparation, focus, and competitive strength.

While medals and awards highlight achievement, Bella’s experience also illustrates the importance of perseverance in athletic development. Continuing to train and compete through physical setbacks requires discipline, support, and a strong commitment to the process.

Balancing training with home education allows Bella the structure and flexibility needed to pursue high-level sport while maintaining academic progress. Her recent competition serves as a clear example of what sustained effort and determination can accomplish.

Bella’s success stands as a celebration of hard work, resilience, and the ability to meet challenges head-on, on and off the ice.
