Wheel-y Big Learning Moments: Aila M’s Simple Machines

For Grade 2 student Aila M., learning came to life through a hands-on exploration of simple machines: full of creativity, curiosity, and the kind of excitement that comes from building something all on your own.

Over a few weeks, Aila explored simple machines through fun worksheets, discussions, and lots of hands-on projects. But the most exciting part wasn’t just learning about how things work; it was getting to build them.

From wheelbarrows to Ferris wheels to a working pulley system, each project gave her the chance to turn ideas into something she could see, touch, and watch in motion.

As Aila worked through each build, she learned how to follow instructions, think through each step, and keep going, even when things didn’t work perfectly the first time.

With patience and a little problem-solving, each piece began to fall into place.

From a parent’s perspective, those moments were unforgettable:

“The kids can plan, build and create with a completed project that moves and works. They understand simple instructions, held enthusiasm and interest.  Seeing the light in their eyes creating a simple machine on their own was priceless.”

It’s in those moments, the turning wheels, the lifting pulleys, that learning really sticks.

One of the best parts of Aila’s experience was having the time to truly enjoy the process. Instead of rushing from one task to the next, she could slow down, focus, and see each project through from beginning to end.

Her parents shared that home education gave her the freedom to fully explore her ideas: building, testing, and trying again until everything worked just right. Along the way, simple concepts became hands-on discoveries she could genuinely understand and enjoy.

It made space for curiosity, creativity, and a lot of excitement along the way. However, it also made space for what she wants to make next.

Aila is already thinking about her next big project, and this time, she’s going even bigger.

Together, her family is planning to build a Ferris wheel that stands 2–3 feet tall!

It’s an exciting challenge, and a perfect next step for someone who already knows how to turn small ideas into something amazing.

Through building, experimenting, and trying again, she’s discovered not only how simple machines work, but how fun it is to figure things out along the way. Aila, we celebrate your creativity, your curiosity, and all the incredible things you’re building. We can’t wait to see what you create next!
