HCOS’ home education changed my life for the better. I was given the freedom, the capacity, and the opportunity to become the best version of myself as a student. It prepared me in such a way to recognize that while we may have a schedule and an expectation for our present and future circumstances, God’s timing and power is what really allows us to walk in favour and shine in all of the things that we do. Coming to HCOS from another highschool in grade 11 made me feel a little bit nervous and lost for a short while, but then when I was met with the warmth and incredible kindness of the teachers and the rest of the staff, I felt right at home. 2020 was an odd year to graduate, and it was difficult to have to graduate online, but still, I was so honored with how the teachers honored us graduates that year. We really felt like one big family.

I was given the freedom, the capacity, and the opportunity to become the best version of myself as a student.

Specifically, I want to honor and thank my English and Psychology teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Daley, as well as my Christian Studies teacher, Mr. Laird. These teachers always had such uplifting things to say about me, and always made me feel incredibly noticed and appreciated, both as a person and a student. I told each of them about the fact that I was praying for the biggest scholarship at the Australian university I had gotten accepted into, a 50% off total tuition fees scholarship, and they gave me absolutely lovely reference letters for my application. After months of trial and error, trying to apply and study during COVID times and restrictions, and failing to win this big scholarship twice, I finally won it on my third try in December. I was ecstatic.

...I trust that God will continue to direct my path into the right direction, as I know He has always done for me.

Long story short, because of the fact that Australia still won’t let anybody fly in unless they are vaccinated, I couldn’t go and study this March, as I planned to. So, because I had learned the art of perseverance at HCOS and recently with this scholarship, I pleaded with the university to allow me to defer this scholarship to the next semester in July, so that I wouldn’t lose it. This looked awfully difficult as this was the only university that I had applied to that did not allow deferrals. Still I persevered with the thought in mind that God will give me the favour to receive a deferral if it was His will for me to keep my focus on this university. After explaining my situation to the vice president of the university, she granted my request and allowed me to keep the scholarship, at least for now until July. I couldn’t believe it! My near future is still very confusing and seems completely out of my hands most days, but I trust that God will continue to direct my path into the right direction, as I know He has always done for me. I am still praying that Australia will do away with its travel restrictions so that I can begin studying there.
In conclusion, HCOS has taught me how to stay focused and perseverant. I can’t thank my teachers enough for the amazing material they taught me. I felt like I learned more in the last two years of high school than I had learned all throughout the rest of my studies. It is my great honor to share this story with HCOS, and it will always be an honor to be an alumni of such an exquisite school.

Update

The border restrictions have lifted after 2 1/2 years, and I was granted yet another deferral both to my program and my scholarship (which was otherwise non-deferrable)! I am going to begin my studies in October! God’s faithfulness and grace in these circumstances is what pushed me to persevere and is what caused so many impossible things to come to pass.
