HCOS Alumna Brie Qualifies for the Olympics with Team Canada Women’s Volleyball

Brie has been playing volleyball since third grade. “I watched both my older sisters playing when I was little and wanted to follow in their footsteps,” she says. After four years of collegiate volleyball at Trinity Western University, she went on to play professionally and for Team Canada.

What makes this qualification so meaningful is how long the team has been working toward it. “I’m really proud of how many years our team has been fighting for this Olympic spot, and how much we overcame to finally achieve it,” Brie says. Most of the team tried to qualify for the 2024 Olympics and fell just short.

“To see us all come back and fight even harder and accomplish our goal together as a unit is really special.”

The road wasn’t easy off the court either. Many of Brie’s professional years were spent overseas, far from family and community. “I had to learn the hard way just how important it is to build community wherever God has you,” she shares.

“Walking in faith is not meant to be done alone.”

“I think my time being homeschooled prepared me richly for life after high school,” Brie says. “I loved the flexibility it gave me to practice, as well as meaningful time with my parents and siblings that you don’t get often in conventional school scheduling.”

At home, she says, “I learned that hard work pays off, and that when you set your mind to something, it’s amazing to see what is possible.” It’s been many years since she graduated in June 2015, so she can’t pinpoint a single course or teacher, but she adds, “I loved my time and am such an advocate for this school and style of learning.”

Brie encourages students to “build a foundation of their own personal faith as soon as they can.”

When you graduate and begin to live independently, she says, it’s important to know what matters to you, “not just your family,” and “to discover God on your own and build a relationship with Him.” In her words: “That is the thing that will carry you through and be your rock no matter what path in life you choose.”
