The Blocks’ Home Education Journey

Education is about more than academics; it is about nurturing passions, overcoming challenges, and empowering children to achieve their unique potential. For one HCOS family, the Blocks, home education has been a key part of that journey.

A Writer’s Journey: From Dyslexia to Excellence

The eldest child, now 25 years old, faced early struggles with dyslexia. Reading and writing were difficult during her primary years, but with the help of home education, persistence, and tailored support, she overcame these hurdles. By grade 12, she had become such an accomplished writer that she earned top awards in English, Psychology, and Geography. Scholarships funded by her exceptional writing skills paid for most of her post-secondary education. Today, she works in a job she loves, helping women with addictions.

Creativity and Leadership: A Path to Impact

The second child, a 21-year-old with a passion for economics and sustainable missions, is currently putting himself through Bible school. His goal is to work in a sector that supports missions—helping local communities in Africa build self-sustaining economies. With creative investments and hard work, he has also grown a monetized YouTube channel where he reviews and comments on family-friendly video games. This passion recently took him to Sweden for an all-expenses-paid conference. Additionally, as a team leader at his school, he is preparing for a spring mission trip to the Dominican Republic. His next steps include completing a Bachelor of Arts in non-profit organizational leadership and pursuing a law degree to further his mission-focused goals.

Perseverance and Skill: Preparing for the Future

The third child, a 19-year-old daughter, despite being born missing four fingers on one hand, she taught herself to type efficiently with a one-handed typing program. By grade 11, she had achieved an impressive typing speed of 76 words per minute, a skill that served her well in her online schooling with HCOS. Her ability to adapt and excel is a testament to her resilience and hard work.

A Bright Start: Learning with Energy and Enthusiasm

The youngest child, now in grade 8, is an active kinesthetic learner who thrives in a dynamic educational environment. Registered with HCOS, she enjoys the flexibility and tailored approach that home education provides. The family is excited to see where her unique strengths and passions will lead her.

Celebrating Freedom and Flexibility

Home education has been a journey of growth, challenges, and countless rewards for this family. It has allowed them to tailor learning to each child’s needs and support their individual pursuits. They are grateful for the freedom Canada offers to educate in a way that fosters both academic success and personal development.

The children’s achievements remind us that education is not just about meeting standards but about helping individuals thrive in their unique ways. The family eagerly anticipates what the future holds for all of them as they continue to pursue their dreams with purpose and passion.
